2 Sentences or Less
October 14th, 2006
If something is important, insightful, or valuable for people to know, shouldn’t you be able to explain it succinctly to others? I believe this to be true, and it’s the manifesto for this site.
I know what you’re thinking, “Great. Another voice in the blogosphere with nothing unique to say.” Well, I hope I can change your mind.
I love technology, in all its forms - software, math, hardware, science, cryptography. The problem with having a passion for all things geeky, it might be hard to share the excitement - and importance of these things - without overwhelming your audience. So, my wife came up with a great solution, which is the manifesto for this site. “Explain it to me in 2 sentences or less.”
It’s actually a great exercise, in communication - but also in education. If you can truly grok a topic, and understand the fundamental components that make it up - you should be able to filter that topic to its most granular nuggets. And transfer that knowledge to someone else. I’ve heard it referred to as the “Elevator Speech” or “Parking Lot Talk”, but in the spirit of succinct granularity - I’ll stick to “2 Sentences.” This will be the crux of my site - whatever the topic may be. I’ll leave you with heady Einstein quote, that hopefully reinforces my view. He stated my thesis succinctly.
Albert Einstein
“Everything should be made as simple as possible, but not simpler.”

“2 Sentences” is a great concept. Leave it to smart women to get us to ‘boil it down’ … My mother spoke fondly of my father’s practice of ‘winding motors’ - a label that grew out of his trying to explain electro-magnetic fields and electric motors.
So don’t wind motors and keep it to two sentences.
